Book Launch

The Sinhalese Cultural Forum ended this year’s activities on a high note by organising another memorable event. This time it was the turn for the Sinhalese Writers.

‘Antharjaala Kavi Sanvada,’ the poetry book compiled by Palitha Manchanayake was launched on the 7th of December 2014 at the Gym Room of the Don Moore Community Centre. In attendance were the book lovers in Sydney. And there was a well known Sri Lankan as well. He is the producer of ‘Doramandalawa’, the popular Rupavahini programme, Dr Hasantha Hettiarachchi.

The organiser and the MC of the event Rasika Suriyaarachchi invited the president of SCF Indu Premathilaka, Vice President (Media) Malee Disanayake, veteran Sinhala song writer Maithree Panagoda, veteran journalist Dr Don Wickrama and the author of the book Palitha Manchnayake to light the traditional oil lamp.

After this, the president Indu Premathilake welcomed the audience and said SCF is always happy to support Sinhalese writers for their contributions to cultural life in New South Wales. He then briefly described the 25th anniversary celebrations of SCF and requested all to gather around the SCF umbrella.

Maithree Panagoda, the first guest speaker, quoted some enjoyable poems from the book and entertained the audience. The second guest speaker, Dr Don Wickrama, gave a valuable speech which included the poems written in ancient Anuradhapuara era to Colombo era, covering ‘Siyabas Lakara’, ‘Asak da kava’ and ‘Sigiri Gee’. Both guest speakers praised Palitha for taking Sinhala poets to linguistic discussions through the internet.

The audience was given a time to enjoy a few poems from the book. The poems were recited by Ranavalee Guneratne.

The first book of ‘Antharjaala Kavi Sanvada’ was presented to Sarath and Ranjanie Manchanayake. Sarath described how Palitha’s father encouraged them to write poems in their young ages. The second and third books were presented to Kithsiri Karunaratne and SCF President Indu Premathilake.

The author of the book Palitha Manchnayake also addressed the audience.

In his vote of thanks Samapriya Sumanasekara, a co-ordinator of the Writer’s Guild, thanked everybody who made this evening memorable.

SCF media would like to thank photographers Robin Bosco and Thanuja Bandara for covering the event.
